Summer training camps usually are several week excursions with coaches and teammates; a lot of hard work, learning, team bonding and a little fun. Teams seldom cross paths, unless they meet in one of the popular training sites like Obertilliach or Ruhpolding.
Yet, recently, the French and Belarusian women were both training with their teams in Bormio, Italy, staying in hotels just a kilometer apart. On a brilliant afternoon with high mountain peaks as a backdrop, two of the top women in biathlon, France’s Marie Laure Brunet and Belarus’ Darya Domracheva sat down for an afternoon chat; the sharpshooter and the speedster exchanging ideas.
Like most of the athletes on the World Cup circuit, the two women knew each other, but never sat down before to just talk. After a quick opening question, the two women took over the interview, asking each other questions, about biathlon and life away from the sport. These two top biathletes from different teams and distant parts of Europe found out they had a lot of common interests.
